The Last Christmas

All our gifts are wrapped, our bags are packed, the car is loaded, and I'm just waiting for Matt to get off work so we can head to Weatherford. Today as we've been preparing for Christmas, I've been looking ahead to next year and how Christmas will be different. As excited as we both are to celebrate Christmas this year and about the wonderful memories we're sure to make, it's hard not to think ahead to next Christmas and the changes that are headed our way.

This is the last Christmas before we become parents.

It's the last Christmas that Rhapsody will have free reign of the backseat during the drive to Weatherford.

It's the last Christmas to celebrate with my parents at their house in Weatherford (They'll be living in Broken Arrow starting next month).

It's the last Christmas card picture of just the two of us (and Rhapsody).

It's the last Christmas we'll be able to drive our Focus home, because everything we need for the trip still fits in our trunk.

It's the last Christmas I'll wonder what it would be like to have a baby at Christmas (I'm glad we waited a few years to start a family, but I always get baby fever at Christmas).

It's most likely the last Christmas where we won't have to travel on Christmas day.

It's the last Christmas before Matt and I have a better understanding of the sacrifice God made in sacrificing His child for our salvation.

It's the last Christmas before we get to experience the joy of Christmas from a child's perspective.

It's the last Christmas dinner that won't involve feeding someone else or cutting up their food.

It might be the last Christmas that Matt and I are able to stay up until midnight on Christmas eve to exchange gifts with each other.

I just can't get over how blessed we are to have all these changes to look forward to. God has been so good to our family.

Santa Came Early

The past few years instead of exchanging Christmas gifts with each other, Matt and I have splurged and made a big purchase together that we can both enjoy. In the past we've bought a wii, a glass storm door and a laptop. This year we had tossed around the idea of getting new living room furniture, specifically a new entertainment center and coffee and end tables. (Somehow, our gifts keep going up in price). Matt's stipulation was that new furniture required a new TV. The same stipulation applied when we bought new bedroom furniture a couple of years ago. I think we have a pattern going, but I'll always give in if it means he'll go furniture shopping with me :).

We spent awhile looking earlier this Fall and then everything got busy and we put the buying on hold. We finally had some time a couple of Saturdays ago to go back to the furniture store and order the furniture, and it came in last weekend. We weren't expecting it until after the new year but were pleasantly surprised, and with some help from our friends we got it moved and situated last weekend.

Our previous entertainment center had been a Walmart special that we bought 5 years ago, and our coffee and end tables were hand me downs from my parents, so I was excited to have all new matching furniture for the living room. And I do have to admit that the big TV is pretty nice. We still exchange small gifts with each other at Christmas, but this is definitely our big present to each other.

Christmas Date 2010

One of my favorite Christmas traditions that Matt and I do every year is have an annual Christmas date. Basically it's just an excuse to spend an entire day together doing fun things, but I look forward to planning it every year.
We celebrated our date last Saturday and had a great day. Saturday morning we got up and headed to do a little shopping. We found out the gender of Lovebug on Thursday, so we wanted to pick up a few gender specific items and look at bedding and nursery decor. We also had a couple of other errands to run while we were out. Since Matt has been in Florida so much, most of my baby shopping has been with my mom, so it was super fun going with Matt. We got home about 11:00 and spent the next few hours baking and decorating Christmas cookies. I love baking and decorating cookies each year, and Matt is always a good sport and helps me. We've given some away to friends and have been munching on the rest all week.

After we finished with the cookies, we spent the afternoon playing Wii. It had been a long time since we had played, and it was fun to break it out again and play for a couple of hours.

That evening we got dressed up and headed to dinner here. It was really yummy. Matt had the filet and said it was the best steak he's ever had at a restaurant. The restaurant is at Utica square which is all lit up and decorated for Christmas. It was gorgeous.
Before Dinner

Rhapsody got jealous that she wasn't in the picture

After dinner, we browsed another baby store at the square and then headed home. We had a couple more Christmas goodies to make and share so we spent the rest of the evening making turtles and chocolate dipped pretzels.

It was a great date, and I was thankful that we could spend the whole day together doing fun things.

Halfway There

Yesterday marked the 20 week mark in my pregnancy. I really can't believe that I've already reached the halfway mark and that this baby will be here in less than 4.5 months. We have so much to do before he/she arrives. Here's an update on my pregnancy now that we've reached the 20 week milestone.

Symptoms
:

So far, the second trimester has held up to all the hype I've read/heard about. I feel great. I'm not nearly as tired as I was during the first trimester and no longer need a daily nap after work. I've still never had to deal with much nausea, and I'm so thankful for that. Really, the only symptom I've noticed lately is that I get pretty congested at night. And yes, that is a pregnancy symptom. my books have told me so. I asked my doctor for remedies and after trying a couple of her ideas, I'm starting to sleep better at night. For a few weeks there, I would wake up and spend 30 minutes blowing my nose before I could make it back to sleep. The last few days have been much better though, and I'm still sleeping really good at night. I only have to get up twice at the most in the night to go to the bathroom. I'm enjoying it while it lasts, because I know the 2nd trimester won't last forever.

Favorite Moments:

At my 14 week appointment, we got to hear Lovebug's heartbeat for the first time. When the doctor came in she said, "Now you're still in the gray zone of hearing the heartbeat, so don't freak out if we can't find it right away." Lovebug knew that his/her parents didn't need any added stress though, and as soon as the doctor put the doppler on my stomach we heard a steady heartbeat, such a precious sound. We heard it again at my 18 week appointment. It never gets old :)

I really enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving this year with a little baby bump. It was a constant reminder of how much we have to be thankful for and fun to think ahead to a new guest who will be joining our table next year.

One of my favorite things about being pregnant is watching Matt interact with the baby. He rubs my belly all the time and talks to the baby everyday. When I picked him up from the airport a few weeks ago, he asked how the baby was, and I told him that the baby was able to hear sounds and voices. Right there in the airport, he bent down and started talking to my belly. I know I'm totally going to lose it when I see him holding that baby in his arms.

Lovebug has started kicking. So far, they've been pretty soft, and Matt hasn't felt them yet. Last night he was rubbing my belly and told me to tell the baby to kick. When there was no response from the baby, he told me I needed to work on my parenting :). I'm sure it won't be long before I can't get the baby to stop kicking.

Our BIG ultrasound is scheduled for tomorrow, and as long as the baby cooperates, we will know whether we have a son or a daughter. We're keeping it a secret until Christmas though, so don't expect any big announcements for another couple of weeks.

Maternity Clothes:
I've converted to wearing maternity jeans and dress pants. I told Matt last night that I was never going back to regular jeans. I was just going to wear maternity jeans the rest of the my life. They are much more comfortable. All my maternity shirts are still too big, so I'm still in regular shirts and sweaters.

Trimming the Tree

Sunday night Matt and I decorated our Christmas tree. He turned on Christmas music (Trans-Siberian Orchestra), I whipped up some hot cocoa and we got to work. Decorating the tree together is a really special time for us. So many of our ornaments are just bursting with memories and special significance from our childhood and our relationship to some of the best times in our lives. We spent the evening reminiscing and enjoying each other. We got a few new ornaments this year that I wanted to share.

We picked these up when we were in Disney World last May:

One of our traditions is to try and get an ornament during every vacation we take. We had fun shopping for these at the Christmas themed gift shops at the park.

We picked this up when I visited Matt in Florida in July. It was a mini vacation for us, and we wanted to document the vacation with a Christmas ornament:
These two ornaments came from a recent ornament exchange with our Sunday school class:

We just love our Sunday school class and all the couples in it, and I always have the best time at our Christmas parties. This year we ate delicious food surrounded by great company, played Dirty Santa for the ornament exchange, shared about our Christmas traditions, sang Christmas carols, and spent time in prayer. It was a really fun night, and we have new ornaments to document the memories with the couples in our class.

And here's the finished product:

I have one more new ornament to hang this year, but it's not quite ready for the tree. I'll be hanging it next week, and I'll be sure to share when it's finished.

Home Improvement

Before:

During:

After:

I love it!

We had been talking about replacing the linoleum in our kitchen pretty much since we bought our house. We knew it would be easier to sell if the floor was redone with ceramic tile, and we want to enjoy the new floor as long as can while we're living here, so we wanted to replace it sooner rather than later. We hadn't planned on replacing the floor until next year, but thankfully because of Matt's extra overtime pay, we were able to do it this year. I'm so glad it's finally finished and my kitchen is back in order. It was no fun having no hot water in the kitchen and my appliances strung out all over the house for a week. The not having to cook part was kind of nice though. I enjoyed having an excuse to eat out all week. It was like a date night every night :).

Thanksgiving Weekend 2010

Thanksgiving 2010 was a great success. This was my third year to host our families in our home and it seems to be getting easier and more fun each year. I really enjoy hosting and inviting all our family members to our home, and I hope it’s a tradition we can continue for several years. Matt and I started our holiday weekend on Wednesday. He took off work, so he could help me and have a little downtime before company started arriving. I started cooking and cleaning Tuesday night and finished Wednesday just a couple of hours before my grandparents arrived. Matt was a great help and willing to do anything on my list that I asked him to. Granny and Grandaddy arrived Wednesday about 2:00 and we visited and played a couple of rounds of Skipbo. My mom had a hair appointment scheduled Wednesday afternoon so Barry dropped her off and then made it over about 3:30. We visited for awhile and my mom got to our house around 5:00. We all ran down to Wendy’s for an easy supper and then headed back home to play cards for the rest of the evening.

Thursday morning we had a light breakfast. I made a lemon poppyseed cake and we had some fruit to go with it. We watched the parade and my mom and I did a few things in the kitchen. Matt’s family arrived around 11:00 and we just relaxed, watched the parade and got things ready for lunch.
Snickers was the newest member of the family this year. She is my parents' new dog. She kept us entertained.
We had a great Thanksgiving lunch. My mom took charge of the turkey (someday I promise I’ll learn how to make one), and my grandma brought dressing. I made mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, cherry salad, a new cabbage salad, gravy, and rolls. I also made macaroni and cheese this year especially for Matt. He’s not a big fan of Thanksgiving food (turkey or ham or the side dishes), so I decided to make him a dish I knew he’d like. It went over really well, so I think it will probably become a new staple on the Thanksgiving table. For dessert, I made a pumpkin roll, cheesecake and Granny brought an apple pie. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m pregnant but everything tasted so good this year!

After lunch was over, and the dishes were done, everyone just relaxed. Grandaddy and Madeline spent the evening working on a puzzle. Matt helped them some. We also had the Texas vs. Texas A&M game on, and a few of us played cards too. It was just a relaxing time spent with a full house of family.

Friday morning Matt and Barry cooked breakfast and we said goodbye to Matt’s family and Granny and Grandaddy. That morning/afternoon Barry and Matt spent the day golfing. Barry has recently taken up golfing as his new hobby and asked Matt to join him for the day. While the guys were golfing, my mom and I went shopping of course. We didn't join the crazy early morning shoppers but spent most of the day out and about. We went crazy at the maternity store in the mall, and I should be set with clothes for awhile. The sales lady seemed so happy probably because she got a HUGE commission. I had a better time shopping for maternity clothes this trip. Last time, I was only 11 weeks pregnant and wasn't showing and the clothes just looked so big and were hanging off of me. This time, I have a little bump (or bulge as Matt calls it), so the clothes fit better and actually looked somewhat cute. I still think my mom has a better time when we go maternity clothes shopping than I do. I'm pretty much totally in maternity pants, but haven't had to wear any maternity tops yet. After the maternity store, we browsed a few other stores. I got some new shoes and some Thanksgiving decorations that were 50% off. We also found a couple of cute baby stores and looked around to get some ideas for furniture, etc.
Friday night we just ate leftovers for dinner, played settlers and watched some football. Barry and I stayed up to watch the Boise State vs. Nevada game. That was a crazy game. I kept saying, "I'm going to bed after this drive," and then something crazy would happen and I'd have to stay and watch. We finally made it to bed about 1:30 in the morning.

Saturday morning, we went out to breakfast, and then my mom and I finished up some errands. We were mainly just browsing at a few stores and picked up a few things at Target. Meanwhile, the boys went home and destroyed my kitchen. We had scheduled to have ceramic tile installed the following Monday, so they spent all day moving appliances and scraping linoleum. They worked straight up until the bedlam game started. My mom and I supervised and ran to Lowes a couple of times to get them tools. They both worked so hard. I know Matt was so thankful to have Barry's help. He always just jumps right in and is willing to help. It made the job 10 times easier for Matt that Barry was there. We both owe him a big thank you.

Of course we watched the game Saturday night. By now, I'm pretty used to losing, so even though we were favored, I never got my hopes up too high. It was a fun game to watch, and the Cowboys played much better than last year. I told Matt last week that even if we didn't win another game the rest of the season, it was still the best season I've seen since I've been an OSU fan, so I wasn't too upset, and it didn't ruin the weekend or anything. I kept reminding myself that there is more to life than football and I was glad that we decided not to buy season tickets.
Sunday after church Matt and Barry finished removing the linoleum in the kitchen before Mom and Barry left. I took a nap that afternoon and we spent the evening playing Settlers with some friends. It was a great weekend, and we're both looking forward to celebrating next year with our newest Baugher :).

Thankful

Saturday was our 4.5 year anniversary, and as we were talking Saturday we realized that so far we have spent about 60% of our 4th year of marriage separated because of Matt’s work schedule and the project he’s been working on in Florida. We’re praying the project is drawing to an end, but it has already taken much longer that I had ever expected. As I was thinking back on the last six months and the struggles we have faced, I’ve realized that through this trial, God has continued to bless us and remained faithful in our lives and our marriage. So, since Thanksgiving is on Thursday, I wanted to share a few things I’m thankful for related to the trial we’ve been facing since June.

I’m thankful for God’s promises: This summer when I was dealing with the illnesses of Barry’s mom and my grandpa and coping with being separated from Matt, I spent a lot of time meditating on a scripture in I Peter.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1: 3-7

I memorized it and had it taped to my bathroom mirror for awhile. It was a constant reminder to me that the trials we face are not wasted but have a purpose. Whenever I would have a hard day, I would pray that through the trials I was facing, my faith would be strengthened and God would be glorified. I found so much comfort in those verses and in God’s promises to take care of His children.

I’m thankful for our marriage: Honestly, I’m thankful that the time we spent apart has been so difficult for us. I think about how sad it would be if it wasn’t a big deal to be separated from my spouse for so long and what it would be like if we didn’t miss each other when we were apart. I’m glad it’s hard for both of us, because to me it shows the strength of our marriage. In my ladies Bible study, we’ve been studying the Song of Solomon the last couple of weeks, and it’s been a reminder of how thankful I am to have a loving husband and to be in a marriage relationship with him.

I’m thankful for my pregnancy: I know that our time apart would be much harder if we hadn’t been able to get pregnant so quickly. I can imagine how frustrated and discouraged I would feel if we were still trying to get pregnant and Matt was out of town 3 weeks of every month. The pregnancy has also brought some fun distractions that has eased some of the difficulty of our time apart. Plus, it’s hard to get down and feel sorry for ourselves when we have so much to be thankful for and look forward to in the coming months.

I’m thankful for overtime pay: In no way do I want to come across that the extra money Matt is earning from his time in Florida is worth the time we are spending apart, but having the extra money has been a blessing to us. We’ve been able to make some purchases we probably wouldn’t have made because of the extra cash flow including replacing the flooring in our kitchen with ceramic tile. Also, we’ve been able to make some large payments on our mortgage to bring our balance down and increase our savings account which has been a blessing especially with a little one on the way that brings lots of extra expenses with him/her. Plus, I can't imagine how miserable we would be feeling if Matt's company didn't pay overtime and he was across the country working crazy hours and not being compensated anything extra for it. I know my attitude toward the project would be much worse.

I’m thankful for lessons we’ve learned in valuing our time together: Since we’ve spent so many weeks apart lately, I’ve noticed that we both have been more purposeful in the time we do spend together. We’re more focused on valuing our time and doing things as a couple. We put more effort into planning our time together and ensuring that we are doing things that allow us to spend as much quality time together as possible. I hope we continue to be purposeful in the way we spend our time even when we get back into a normal routine after Matt’s work in Florida is over.

I’m thankful for Matt’s job: Whenever I get frustrated or upset about Matt’s constant out of town work, I’m reminded how great of a job that he has. He’s never really been in danger of losing his job, but this project has earned him credibility among his bosses and has secured his job at Flight Safety even further, and we found out yesterday that the next project he is being assigned is never leaving Broken Arrow. That is wonderful news!

I’m thankful that this is the trial we’re facing: I know of many other families whose current struggles and trials are more serious than ours. There are families with sick children, with financial troubles and other struggles that are more difficult than ours. When I start to feel down about our current situation, I remind myself of all the things we do have that many other families do not including our health, a comfortable home, financial security, dependable jobs, supportive families, Godly friends and an incredible church family. We are truly blessed beyond measure.

Special Souvenirs

You'll probably remember from my endless posts about our Disney World vacation that it was a special week in our lives, but for us it signified more than just a fun vacation. It was a celebration of our 4 years of marriage as well as a milestone and a marker in our marriage that we were ready, if God chose to bless us, to bring children into our family. (We didn't tell anyone of the significance of our vacation, but I still think a few close friends had it figured out). We had known for probably about a year the timeline of when we wanted to start trying for a family and when our Disney vacation landed around that time in our timeline, we thought it would be fun to celebrate our decision at Disney World. For us it made our vacation even more special and exciting. Babies and children were a frequent topic of discussion while we were at the parks (easy to happen when we were surrounded by them all day), and at our anniversary dinner we spent the evening reflecting on our fourth year of marriage and discussing how we hoped our fifth year of marriage would bring lots of excitement and change. And remember that wish I made during the wishing ceremony, well I bet you all now know what I wished for, though I will make it clear that I attribute about 0.00% of our getting pregnant to that wishing star ceremony and attribute 100% of it to God's grace and blessings in our lives.

While we were there, we decided to pick up a couple of special souvenirs in the hope that we would be needing them in the future. We had fun dreaming and talking about our future as we browsed all things baby at the gift shops. Here's what we ended up with.

They are currently safely tucked away in my hope chest ready to be used in 2011! Can't you just picture a chubby baby boy wearing that onesie with some tiny blue jeans, or a precious little girl with a big red bow in her hair while she's sporting it? I can't wait!

And just because it was in the hope chest with the other baby things we've accumulated, I had to share a sweet little gift Lovebug's aunt and uncle sent us.
Considering they are both 2 time OU alum, we know they already love Lovebug a lot!

First Trimester, Check!

I reached a milestone yesterday in my pregnancy. I started my second trimester. Since I got pregnant and started reading all about pregnancy, everything I read pointed to the second trimester as a dream: no more nausea, energy is back, etc., so I had been looking forward to reaching that milestone for awhile. Now that I'm there, I'm realizing how easy my first trimester really was. I think God knew that with everything non pregnancy related happening in my first couple months of pregnancy (Matt gone, family illnesses and funerals), that I needed an easy first trimester. With all that said, here are a few highlights of my first 13 weeks of pregnancy

Symptoms:

Fatigue: I have been pretty tired since I got pregnant. In fact, it had pretty much become routine for me to come home after work and crash on the couch for about an hour before starting my evening. Matt frequently finds me there when he comes home from work in the evenings (when he's in town). I'm glad my schedule has been pretty flexible so that I've had time to squeeze some napping into my schedule

Nausea: I've had VERY little of this. There have been a few times where my stomach has felt just a little unsettled, but no major nausea at all. I did get sick one time. I woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible headache, and we had gone to the fair that day, so I think the headache and the fair food, and pregnancy all combined for one minor bout of sickness. I will always remember Matt's response when he got up with me when I was throwing up in the bathroom. As I'm throwing up, he says, "Well, you said you wanted to get sick so you would feel pregnant." Yes, there was a time in my pregnancy where I was wanting to feel a little more pregnant, but I quickly told him that this was not the time to be bringing that up.

Sleep: The first couple of weeks after we found out we were pregnant, I had a hard time sleeping. It was probably a combination of excitement and nerves, but it took me a long time to fall asleep every night. I'm sleeping much better now, although I do get up more in the middle of the night. I think my body's getting me ready for the months of interrupted sleep that are coming my way :)

Other than those few symptoms, I haven't noticed any others. There seem to be a million other symptoms I've read about: sensitivity to smell, heartburn, headaches, food cravings/aversions etc, but I haven't really noticed anything else. I've been blessed that's for sure.

Favorite Moments:
Obviously finding out we were pregnant will be one of my favorite memories for a very long time.

Telling all our family and friends were also some of the best moments of the first trimester

Getting to see our Lovebug was a great moment. At my ten week appointment, we had our first ultrasound, and it was so fun. I used to wonder why all the pregnant women I knew showed off pictures of all their ultrasounds, and oohed and aahed over them in front of everyone. Now, I totally understand! Seeing our baby made the pregnancy feel real for sure. We got to see the tiny heart beating and the baby was wiggling all around. As soon as the baby popped up on the screen, Matt reached over and grabbed my hand, and exclaimed, "It's our baby." We definitely think our baby is the cutest baby we have ever seen :).

Shortly after we told my parents our news, I met my mom in Oklahoma City for a day of baby shopping. Really, we just went to browse around and plan, but my sweet mom did buy us this for Lovebug.
We spent the day looking at cribs, strollers, and bouncy seats and talking all things baby.

Maternity Clothes:
I haven't had to wear any maternity clothes just yet, but I have a feeling they will be coming out soon. My jeans have been getting a little uncomfortable lately. Last Spring I lost about 15 lbs, so a lot of my clothes were pretty loose which is delaying the need for maternity clothes for the moment. My mom was up a couple of weekends ago, and we went on a maternity clothes shopping spree, so I'll be ready as soon as the time comes.

Baby Bump pictures:

10 weeks

12 weeks

14 weeks

Matt and I can definitely tell there is a bump, but usually it depends what I'm wearing whether it's noticeable to anyone else.

It's hard to believe I'm already a third of the way through my pregnancy. I do realize that that statistic is a little misleading since we didn't have any idea I was pregnant until I was almost 5 weeks in. Still, at that time the second trimester seemed a long way off. I'm so excited to have reached this milestone though. I know the second trimester is going to be great. I'll get to feel the baby moving and kicking, we'll finally know whether Lovebug's room will be pink or blue, planning and decorating will move into high gear, plus all the holidays are coming up too. We've got an exciting few months ahead of us!

Relaxing Weekend

Matt came home from Florida on Saturday morning and I had been looking forward to spending the weekend with him all week long. We had plenty of things we probably needed to do over the weekend, but instead we just enjoyed a relaxing weekend at home doing very little work. It was just what we needed, time to relax, be refreshed and soak up lots of quality time together.
I picked Matt up from the airport at 10:30 on Saturday morning and we made it back home just in time for the OSU vs. Kansas State game. We popped in a frozen pizza and settled in front of the TV for the next few hours. The weekend is always better when OSU comes away with a victory! After the OSU game, we stayed on the couch and watched part of the Nebraska vs. Missouri game. I think we both actually slept through the first half though. I remember waking up and seeing that Nebraska was up by 24 points, so we weren't really interested in watching the rest of the game. Instead we took Rhapsody on a walk and then watched a couple of episodes of the Office on Netflix.

Later that evening, we got ready and headed out on a date. It had probably been months since we had been on an actual date. We had gotten into a pretty good routine last year and were having date nights weekly or at least every other week, but since Matt started working in Florida, it has been hard to stay consistent. Even when he's been home, we've had so much going on, that date nights really got overlooked, so it was a big deal to finally go on one. We ate dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant and enjoyed the quality time we had together to visit and enjoy some yummy food. After dinner, we went to the movies and say Life As We Know It. Matt had given me a coupon for Christmas last year that he would go to any movie of my choosing without complaining, and I finally got a chance to use it. The movie was definitely a chick flick, but I did hear Matt laugh during several parts. It had been a while since we had actually gone out to a movie, so even though it was expensive which is the main reason we usually avoid the theater, it was fun to go out together.

On Sunday after church we kept with our relaxing theme. Rhapsody and I took a nap while Matt messed around on the computer. Later that afternoon, we ran a few errands, and took Rhapsody on a walk. That evening we handed out candy to trick or treaters in our neighborhood and watched How to Train Your Dragon, a movie some of our friends recommended. It was a really cute movie. Although we didn't accomplish much over the weekend, and still have a long list of things we need to get done, I can't imagine a more productive way to spend the weekend than showing each other that our marriage and our relationship is a priority and refilling our love tanks.

Cowboy Nation

This last weekend was homecoming at OSU and a weekend that Matt and I had been looking forward to for several weeks. Our great friends, Corey and Brooke decided this summer that they were going to come to Oklahoma for the weekend and asked to stay with us. We couldn't have been more thrilled to spend a long weekend with them. They are some of our greatest friends and just incredible people in general. We were lucky that we've gotten to see them twice in the last few months since they came to Tulsa to visit in June. Matt got home from Florida just in time to greet them at the airport. I've actually made four trips to the airport since Thursday. It's a good thing it's just a few miles away. Corey and Brooke flew in from Houston Thursday evening. We picked them up and then headed back to our house. We sat and visited while we ate dinner and just enjoyed being together again and catching up.

Friday morning we just relaxed. Matt had to go into work in the morning, but I was off since it was my school's Fall Break. We slept in, ate breakfast and just watched TV and visited until lunch time. For lunch we met Brooke's brother and his fiance who also live in Tulsa. Her brother is an FBI agent, so he had some interesting stories to share. After lunch we came back home, packed up and headed off to Stillwater for the weekend. We made it to Stillwater around 4, and visited with one of Brooke and Corey's friends from Sugar Land for a little while. Matt and I also took the opportunity to walk around campus and visit some of the buildings we frequented a lot when we were in school. We walked past the library and there was no denying that it was Homecoming week with the orange fountain
That evening, we visited our good friends Matt and Amie who were gracious enough to host us for the night in their apartment. And let me tell you, they are great hosts. They are the sweetest couple and Matthew is such a great cook. We were spoiled all weekend long. He prepared us a delicious dinner of pulled pork sandwiches and sweet potato fries, and then we trotted across campus for the famous Walkaround. OSU boasts that they have the world's greatest homecoming. I haven't visited many campuses for homecoming, but OSU's is definitely spectacular. The house decs are phenomenal to look at and such a fun tradition. I've gone to walkaround every year for 8 years. We'll see how long my streak holds up. Next year will be different for our family for sure :).

There were a few standouts this year that were pretty amazing, but I will say the decs have lost some of their grandeur after we've seen so many of them for so many years. After walkaround we went back to the Allen's and spent the rest of the night visiting and eating dessert. It was so nice to spend some time visiting the Matt and Amie. Matt graduates with his Ph.D. in a couple of months, so we know they won't be in Stillwater forever, and we relish the time we get to spend with them.

Matt was still recovering from his recent 11 day trip to Florida and crashed pretty early that night. Corey was kind enough to tuck him in.
The next morning, Matt and Amie prepared a delicious breakfast for all of us of french toast, bacon, and fruit smoothies. We relaxed that morning and played a quick game of Settlers. Brooke and Corey and Matt and Amie have always been some of our favorite people to play games with, so it was fun to all be together again. That afternoon we all dispersed for a couple of hours. Matt and I had a few tailgates we wanted to visit while we were in town and so did Brooke and Corey. I was glad to get to see these lovely ladies and catch up with them for a few minutes that day.
I get to see Deborary fairly often, but I hadn't seen lyda in several months, so it was great to visit with her and hear how everything is going in her life. It's also fun to catch up on all the latest MFT news. I've felt really out of the loop since I graduated. She has plans to move back to Stillwater in a few months so hopefully we won't go as long without seeing each other next time. I could have sat around and visited with Deborah and Lyda all afternoon, but we had to cut our time short after about an hour. Before heading back to Matt and Amie's, we swung by the MBA tailgate and Matt got to visit with a few of his old professors. Even though we didn't have tickets to the football game, it was fun being immersed in the game day atmosphere and surrounded by so much orange.

We all made it back to Matt and Amie's about an hour before the game started and got a chance to play another board game before kickoff. The football game was disappointing to all of us (except Matt. A. who grew up in Nebraska and has been a lifelong Huskers fan), but it definitely didn't ruin our weekend. I think watching it on TV instead of in person led to less emotional investment in the game, and I really knew there was a good chance we wouldn't be able to pull out a victory especially since Nebraska had something to prove after their game against Texas. Plus, I thought our offense looked great and we had an exciting first half, so it wasn't a total let down. Matt and Amie were great at providing comfort food for us during the game too (including homemade soft pretzels which were way better than the cardboard one I would have made Matt buy me if we were at the game), which helped :). After the game, we played one last board game while we waited for the traffic to disperse and then said goodbye to Matt and Amie and drove back home.

We listened to the OU/Missouri game on the way home and watched the second half on TV after we made it back. That was a great game to watch (I'm glad we don't have to play Missouri this season). Sunday morning we went to church and then to lunch at Hideaway. We had a great lunch just visiting with Brooke and Corey and trying to soak up the last few hours we had together before they flew back to Houston. It was harder saying goodbye this time than last time because last time we had a scheduled time when we would see them again. I told them that we owe them a trip to Houston, and I think we're going to try and get down there sometime in the early Spring. We are very thankful for the great friendships we have formed over the years with some great couples!

Matt headed back to Florida early this morning so we spent the rest of last night doing laundry and getting him ready for his trip. We also just relaxed and soaked up some time just the two of us taking Rhapsody for a walk and watching some Netflix.

We had a great homecoming weekend and it definitely lived up to all our expectations.

Sharing the News

As soon as we found out we were expecting (well before actually), we started thinking about how we would share the news with our families. We hadn't told our families or friends that we were trying to get pregnant. In fact the only person I told was my mentor Judy so she could be praying for us (although I think a couple of my close friends had it figured out). We wanted to keep our plans quiet for a few reasons, one of which was that we wanted the news to be a surprise when we did get pregnant so planning how we told people was a fun task Matt and I took on. We discovered we were pregnant the weekend before Labor Day and immediately decided we would head to Weatherford the following weekend to share the news. Unfortunately we found out later that week that Barry's mom had passed away and the funeral was that weekend in Weatherford, so although we had already decided to head home for the weekend, we decided to go a day early to be with my parents. Each time we got off the phone from talking to our parents that week before we shared the news, Matt and I would just smile at each other and say, "They have no idea." It was fun keeping the secret just between the two of us for a few days.

We drove to Weatherford Thursday night and initially planned to tell my parents first, but because of all the family in town for Joyce's funeral, they had company, so we went to Matt's parents house first. I don't remember which one of us came up with the idea of how to tell his parents the news. I think I did. Matt's mom usually starts asking us for a Christmas list a couple of months before Christmas, so this year we made one in advance that looked like this:

When we got to Matt's parents house, Matt said that we had come up with a Christmas list and asked if they wanted to see it. It was fun to see their reaction when they realized our news.

After we spent some time at Matt's parents, we headed over to my parent's house. By this point it was late that night and I absolutely couldn't wait to tell my parents. We made it over there, and Barry's brother and sister-in-law were still there. We visited with everyone for awhile and eventually (I think it was close to 11 that night), they went back to the hotel and we were FINALLY alone with my parents and I didn't wait another second to tell them.

How we decided to tell my parents involves a little back story so hang with me. My mom and I have always been super close. She is my best friend and besides Matt is the person I'm closest to. We lived alone together for the last 3 years my high school and we had agreed during that time that there was no way we could live far away from each other especially when I got older and had kids. So we made a pact that wherever my husband and I ended up settling, she would move not to the same town as me but within an hour distance. In fact when Barry called and asked me permission to marry my mom, I reminded him of our pact, and he agreed to comply. Matt obviously knew about this pact because we talked and joked about it so often. He actually came up with the idea of how to tell them and told me about it before we even got pregnant. Here's what we did.

We got a map and Matt mapped out a circle of appropriate places they could move to that would meet the requirements of the pact. He made an inner circle that was our buffer zone (so we didn't turn into an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond). We also printed out a few real estate listings of surrounding towns.

I handed the folder to my mom and told her that I knew it wasn't the best timing, but we wanted to give them as much notice as we could since they only had until May. She gave me a confused look and opened the folder. She and Barry laughed at the map and my mom started looking at the real estate listings. They totally DIDN'T get it. They were obviously distracted with Joyce's death and everything that was going on and we had all tossed around the idea at times of them moving closer, so she just assumed we were helping them out and a baby didn't go through her head at all. She would browse through the listings and mention how one house was too small or another didn't have enough bedrooms. I kept saying, "You have until May", hoping it would register something. It didn't. She finally said, "Why May?" and I couldn't take it anymore and blurted out, "Because that's when the baby's due!" That's all it took and instantly Mom and Barry both jumped out of their chairs, my mom screamed, "You're pregnant" and they gave us huge hugs. Barry even got teary eyed mentioning how with one death comes another life. Their reaction was just what I was expecting (only I thought they'd catch on a little sooner). I don't think I've ever seen them so excited. They talked about grandparent names, Barry said he was going to teach him/her to fish and my mom said we needed to get to shopping. We sat out on the back porch for a while longer talking all things baby. It was such a fun night! Now we weren't trying to pressure my parents to move anytime soon. 3 hours is a little far but it's doable for now. Not that we would complain if they decided to move though :).

The next day we went over and shared the news with my grandparents. We went to Momoo and Papa's first. As soon as we got there, I told Momoo I had a picture I wanted her to see. I pulled out the picture of Matt and I holding up a positive pregnancy test. She smiled and excitedly said, "You're pregnant?" and hugged me tighter than she had in a long time. My grandpa was sick and having a bad day so I went over to his chair to show him the picture and he hugged me and told me congratulations. That's the last memory I have with Papa, and although I would have loved to see him again to make more memories that moment is so special to me.

Later that afternoon we went over to Granny and Grandaddy's house. We got there and I told them we had something for them. We handed them this card:

I loved Granny's initial reaction. She said, "Great grandparents, We're too young for that!" It was cute. As we were leaving she said I guess we have until May to get a cane. We stayed over there awhile and she told us about family quilts that we could have for the baby and seemed a little distraught that she had to keep the news quiet for a few weeks. She did a good job keeping our secret even though I know it was hard on her.

We also got the opportunity to share the news in person with my Jeremy and Anna and my step-sister, Tiffany and her husband since they were all in town for Joyce's funeral. We didn't think we would get to tell them in person because they live so far away, and although we wish they could have come home for happier circumstances, we were glad to get to tell them in person.

Since that weekend, we've gotten to share the news in person and over the phone with lots of our friends. Although it's been stressful trying to remember everyone we need to tell (and make sure they don't hear the news from someone else), it's been so fun to spread out the excitement of our pregnancy and let others share in our joy.

My family has had a rough summer/fall filled with two very bad doctor's reports, months of watching loved ones suffer, and two funerals. Matt and I believe that God provided this child at the perfect time to show his goodness and to bring joy to our family during our trials. He is taking care of our family through giving us this child, and we are so thankful for his faithfulness and love for us.

Life Changing

When I think back on my life, I can think of a handful of moments that have been truly life changing. You know, when your life is heading one direction and in an instant everything changes. These moments have come in the form of a phone call, a job offer, a question, one spoken sentence, and most recently in the form of two little pink lines on a home pregnancy test.
Since Matt and I got married 4 1/2 years ago, we had spent time discussing the time when we would feel ready to expand our family. For several years of our marriage we were in graduate school or adjusting to new jobs, so we knew it would be awhile before we would be ready to take that next step. We also valued and cherished the time we have shared as a couple in our marriage and were determined to develop a strong marital foundation before adding children to our family. After prayer and discussion, we decided that after 4 years of marriage, we had reached a point in our marriage as well as financially and professionally, that we were ready for the next phase of our lives.

Honestly, I expected to have some difficulty getting pregnant. I've known several couples who have struggled with infertility, and I wanted to be prepared if we had problems. I think this is probably a common fear for most women. That fear combined with a crazy summer out of town work schedule for Matt led me to believe that getting pregnant wouldn't be a quick process. So at the end of August, when I knew there was a possibility I was pregnant, I thought the chance was slim. There was no way I was going to take a test with Matt being out of town (I wasn't going to tell him over the phone, and it would have been torture to keep that secret to myself) so I planned to take a test the weekend when he got back from his trip to Florida.

He got home from Florida on Friday night and we had planned to spend the day together on Saturday. That morning we got up and headed out to breakfast, something we rarely do, but we were celebrating Matt's homecoming. Afterward we drove over to Lowe's to look at ceramic tile for our kitchen. We wanted to get some prices because we've been planning to use some of Matt's overtime pay to tile our kitchen. We got home from our outing around 11, and Matt said he wanted to wash the car since the weather was so nice outside. I hadn't told Matt about the possibility of me being pregnant or that I planned to take a test, because I was just so sure it would be negative that I didn't want to get his hopes up. I planned to take the test, read the negative result, and go on with our weekend not having to wonder any longer about the results. So, when he headed outside to wash the car, I knew that was my opportunity to be alone and take the test. I took the test and watched as the pink dye began to spread into the test window. I knew that the first line was the test line, so when I saw the first pink line appear, I was in total shock. I sat there for a moment trying to control my breathing and whispering "Oh my goodness" over and over again. Then I knew it was time to share the news. I've never been a wife who had an elaborate plan of how to tell her husband she was pregnant. Basically I wanted Matt to know as quickly as possible so we could share in the initial joy and excitement together.

I left the test on the kitchen counter and ran outside to get Matt. I stood in the garage and here's how the conversation went:

Me: "Hey Matt, can you come inside for a minute? It's important"
Matt: "Is it a bug?" (Honestly, that was good logic on his part because I would definitely make him come inside immediately and kill a bug, if I saw one in the house)
Me: "No, it's not a bug, but I need you to come here. I have something to show you."

He dropped his sponge and walked inside. I picked up the test, and with shaking hands and still in shock, I held it up for him to see. It took about two seconds for it to register what I was showing him and then this is how our next conversation went:

Matt: "You're pregnant?"
Me: "That's what this says"
Matt (wrapping his arms around me), "You're really pregnant?"
Me: "That's what the test says, but I'm not sure I believe it"
Matt: "Well, take another one"
Me: "I just went to the bathroom. I can't take another one right now"
Matt: "Drink some water then"

We spent the next few minutes hugging, smiling, and thanking the Lord for such an incredible blessing... and then I took another test.

This time I used one of those fancy digital read out ones. Matt came in and asked what it said. I told him that we had to wait three minutes to find out. He looked back down at it and said, "Um, baby, it didn't take three minutes." I looked down and saw the digital letters spelling out pregnant and I lost it all over again, shocked, excited, and so very grateful. We just couldn't get over how blessed we are to be given this little miracle.

I ended up taking a third test just for fun, because they came in packs of two

After we both calmed down, we went back to finish what we were doing before our lives changed forever. Matt finished washing the car and I did some work in the kitchen. That afternoon we did a little shopping. We ran to the book store to get a pregnancy book and a baby name book and went to a few other stores looking for ideas of things to get to tell our families the news. One of my favorite memories of that day was seeing Matt beaming the entire day. I would look over at him when we were in the car and he was just always smiling. He never stopped smiling the whole afternoon and evening, and his smile was brighter than I've seen in a long time.

That Saturday was a day we will both never forget, the day when we discovered we were no longer a family of two, but a family of three! We give God all the glory in giving us this child, and I still have moments when I think to myself how undeserving I am of all these blessings in our family. God has been so very good to us.

Oh, and because of the conversation we had that day when Matt was washing the car, Baby Baugher is affectionately known as Lovebug (until we know the gender and can finalize a name).

Remembering Papa

I got a tearful phone call from my mom Wednesday morning shortly after I had gotten to work that my grandpa had passed away. He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer at the end of July, so we had all been preparing ourselves, but I was in shock when I heard the news. My first thought after I heard the news was how badly I wanted and needed to be with my family. I immediately called Matt at work and asked if there was any way we could leave for Weatherford that day. He is such a good husband and worked things out at work that we were able to leave town that afternoon, and made it to Weatherford Wednesday night. We made it to my grandma's house just in time for dinner and shared a meal with my parents, grandma, and aunt. I was glad to get a chance to spend some time with my grandma without a house full of people around.

The next day, my mom had to work in the morning, so Matt and I took our time getting ready and ran a few errands. We met my mom and Barry for lunch, and then Barry and Matt took off for OKC, while my mom and I went back to my grandma's. Barry had a doctor's appointment that afternoon in OKC that he really couldn't miss, and I was thankful Matt was willing to go with him, so Barry didn't have to go alone. The preacher doing the funeral came over to my grandma's house that afternoon and most of the family was there and we all sat around sharing stories about Papa and how important he was in our lives. One of the things that stood out to me the whole weekend was the legacy that Momoo and Papa have left. There was a houseful of people who had been directly impacted in so many ways by Papa. Momoo kept saying the whole weekend how great a day that was when she got to hear all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren sharing about the important role Papa played in our lives. Some of the highlights included how Papa loved living life. He worked hard and was able to retire at age 50 and then he and my grandma traveled and enjoyed life. My mom and aunts talked about how their family always valued vacations and making memories. We talked about how supportive Papa was in every decision we made and how he was always there for all of us at all our school events and anything else that he knew was important to us. We smiled when we remembered his laugh and how he loved giving people a hard time. We laughed about the stories he told, marveled at the faithful, loving 54 year marriage between him and my grandma, and cried as we thought about the hole that was left in our family.

One of the things that my cousin mentioned that really has stuck with me is that although we are sad and miss Papa, his death is not a tragedy. He had a great life. My grandma said when the doctor gave him the news about his cancer, he told the doctor that it was okay because he had had lived a full life, and he truly had. I thought about how honored and blessed I would feel if 50 years from now, I had a house full of family sharing stories like we shared about Papa that day. He was a wonderful man.

Thursday evening, we went back over to my grandma's after most of the other family had left for the night. As we were talking about Papa, Momoo mentioned that she had some photo albums and asked if I was interested in looking at them. She pulled out more than 10 albums ranging from the 1920s up to just a few years ago. I sat on the couch next to her as we browsed through the albums. She shared stories about her family, her mother, Papa, their vacations and lots of fun stories about my mom and my aunts. It was a reminder to me to keep updated on all my photo albums because it was just a sweet time hearing my grandma reminisce about her life and her family. They seemed like a fun couple who had the privilege to live life fully. At one point, she was pointing out a picture of her mother and said that the picture had been taken on Momoo and Papa's wedding day. I asked if she had a wedding album, and her eyes instantly lit up. She ran off to find it and I sat and listened to her share about her wedding day, her attendants, her dress, and how weddings were different back then. At one point, I pointed out how happy she and Papa looked on their wedding day, and with tears in her eyes, she said, "You know as much as I loved him then, I love him more now." I want that kind of marriage and am honored to have such a strong example to look to. I know they fought and had stressful and difficult times in their marriage, but their faithfulness and love carried them through and strengthened their commitment.

Friday morning was spent running errands and finishing up details for the funeral on Saturday. That afternoon we went back to my grandma's to visit, and as soon as we got there, she said, "I got some more photo albums out if you want to look at them." We spent more time that afternoon and evening looking at photo albums and time laughing about funny pictures of my mom and grandpa. It was a special time with my grandma that I will always remember.

As I've gotten older, I've come to realize the importance of funerals in honoring our loved ones, aiding in the grief process, providing closure, and bringing families closer together. Papa's funeral was a great celebration not only of his life and legacy but also of the love of our heavenly Father. I heard my grandma tell the preacher when they were planning the funeral that she wanted Papa lifted up during the service, but she wanted God lifted higher. That's exactly what Papa's funeral was: A time to honor a great man and to give praise and glory to our Savior for hope that we will be reunited with Papa again. I was amazed at how well the pastor did in sharing about Papa's life. When we left the funeral I hugged him and told him that what he shared was my grandpa. He shared stories about how Papa always liked giving others a hard time, loved camping and fishing, treasured his wife and adored his children and grandchildren. He spoke of his faith and love for the Lord, and the legacy he has left in the entire town of Weatherford. After the service, and graveside we spent time fellowshipping with our family for the rest of the afternoon, catching up with cousins we hadn't seen in awhile, playing with the younger children in the family and even cuddling up with some precious little puppies one of which I'm sure will be the newest member of the Van Auken family. That evening we told my grandma goodbye and headed back to my parents house to spend some quality time with my parents and Jeremy and Anna before everyone headed back home on Sunday.

Barry's getting some practice for the future :)

Sweet puppies

As difficult and emotionally draining as the weekend was, and as much as our hearts are aching at the loss in our lives, the whole weekend I kept thinking about how blessed I have been to have such a great man in my life for 25 years. He has had a direct impact on my life in providing stability, consistency, love, and humor during my childhood and young adulthood, and I am so honored to be a living part of his legacy. My prayer is that Matt and I and our children will honor him in the way we live our lives. Just like him, I pray that we will love God, love our families, work hard, and experience life as fully as he did.
