We tagged along with a homeschool group to the Rose Hill school house and traveled back in time to 1910 for the day. The kids dressed up, we packed our lunches in pails, made an old fashioned recipe, and watched some Little House on the Prairie episodes to prepare for our day.
The kids were ready for a fun day. The bonnet and hats really did it for me. They're adorable little Pioneer kids.
Sarah and Elise were a part of our group which made the day even more fun.
At the beginning of the school day, the kids walked across a bridge which signified going back in time to 1910.
The kids started the day with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Then they posed for a class picture. The teacher told them not to smile, that they wanted to be known for being serious.
The first lesson of the day was penmanship. They got to use a quill and ink.
Then they had a spelling lesson.
At one point during the morning, the teacher wanted to demonstrate how discipline was handled in 1910, and it perfectly demonstrated the sibling dynamics in our family. I'm still laughing about it. The teacher told a story about how a girl's special broach was stolen by one of the boys in the class and hidden in the furnace. The teacher asked one of the girls in the class to tell everyone which boy took the broach. The sweet little girl didn't want to pick on any of the boys, so she said she didn't know. Then the teacher asked if any of the other girls knew who it was, and guess whose hand shot straight up into the air- my sweet little Elisabeth who immediately pointed and called out Nathan as the offender. Then before the teacher could talk to Nathan, my precious Samuel defended Nathan and told the teacher that there's no way Nathan could have taken the broach because he wasn't there yesterday, ha! The whole class ended up standing up and pointing at Nathan, chanting "Naughty, naughty, naughty." Nathan was a good sport about it all.
Before lunch, the kids had a reading lesson. Both boys volunteered to read at the front of the class.
Lunch and recess was the highlight of the day of course. The kids ate as fast as they could, so they could get to playing.
The Flying Jenny was the most popular part of recess.
After recess, there was another discipline incident as the teacher needed to find out which boy knocked down a girl and stood on her pigtails. Of course, Nathan was branded the culprit, and his consequence this time was to keep his nose on the chalkboard.
The kids had a short math and history lesson and ended the day with a Spelling Bee. All three of my kiddos made it to the final round (thanks to the teacher giving the word "sod" to Elisabeth, ha!).
The kids stayed a little later and had a cake walk game to end the day.
Our trip to Rose Hill was such a fun, immersive, and educational school day. So fun! We're hoping to get to go back again another year.
