Disney World Day 7- Rockin' and Rollin'

Friday was our last day to spend at Disney World. We had the chance to visit all 4 theme parks and both water parks earlier in the week, and we had saved Friday to catch anything we hadn't had a chance to see or to revisit some of our favorite attractions. Since the Rockin Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios had been closed on Sunday when we visited, and since Hollywood Studios was one of our favorite parks, it was an obvious choice to revisit that park on Friday. As we were standing in line waiting for the bus at our resort, we kept seeing lots of people dressed up as Star Wars characters or wearing Star Wars t-shirts. We couldn't figure out why they were all dressed that way until we made it to the park and saw a sign that it was Star Wars weekend. I think Matt did a happy dance when he realized that :). Although Matt was excited about the Star Wars weekend, that also meant a more crowded theme park. Friday was by far the most crowded day of our trip, but thankfully we still didn't have to wait more than half an hour to ride any attraction.

The first thing we did when we got to the park was ride the Toy Story ride again. We knew if we didn't ride it first thing that morning, we weren't going to get to ride it that day because of the crowd. I kept teasing Matt with my goal oriented personality. The last time we rode it, I earned 98,000 points. I told him that if I didn't beat 100,000 this time, we were going to have to stand in line for an hour so I could have another try. I wasn't leaving the park without breaking 100,000. Thankfully, my skills had improved and I earned over 128,000 that round :). It's a good thing we did, because we checked back later that day and the wait time was 90 minutes, the longest we had seen on any attraction the entire week.

Immediately after riding Toy Story we hauled it over to the other end of the park to get in line for the Rockin' Roller Coaster before the line got too crazy. Before we got in line for the ride, we grabbed fast passes so we could ride it again later that day. We actually didn't have to wait in line as long as I thought we would, only about 25 minutes. I'm so glad that the coaster reopened when we were able to ride it, because I think it turned out to be Matt's favorite attraction of the trip. Aerosmith had invited us to his concert and even brought us a limo, but we had to get there fast, and I mean really fast, or we were going to miss the show. We shot off going 0 to 60 in just a few seconds, and before we could catch our breath from the speed, we were traveling upside down. The ride continue through more loops and twists as we traveled through the city jamming to Aerosmith songs and made it to the red carpet just in time for the concert. It was a really fun ride. As soon as we got off, Matt said, "Now that's a roller coaster."

Since the Rockin Roller Coaster was right by the Tower of Terror, we couldn't pass up an opportunity to ride it again, so we reentered the Twilight Zone. That attraction was so fun every time we rode it, because the timing and number of the drops were different each time. I think the last time we rode it was the best. I was surprised that we would drop once and then they would hold us and we would drop again, farther down which I wasn't expecting. I didn't force Matt to ride it with me another time that day, although I was willing to wait in line again.

Our fast passes for the Rockin Roller coaster weren't going to be available until later in the afternoon, so we had a few hours to catch some of the smaller attractions at Hollywood Studios that we had missed earlier that day. We watched the Muppets 3-D show, walked through the museum that was a tribute to Walt Disney, and toured the Magic of Disney Animation attraction.

After lunch we enjoyed the Studio Backlot tour. In that attraction they showed us how different special effects are done in movies and we got to see a lot of props from famous movies.

After the backlot tour, our fastpasses were available for the Rockin Roller coaster, so we rode it again before we left the park for the day.

We went back to the hotel and rested for a couple of hours and then caught a bus to Downtown Disney for the evening. We walked around some of our favorite shops again and picked up a few souvenirs at the World of Disney. We had dinner reservations at Fulton's Crabhouse that evening, and devoured some delicious seafood while we talked about our favorite moments of the vacation.
After dinner, we debated about going to the Magic Kingdom to catch the fireworks display one last time, but decided against it. I wanted our last night to be relaxing and calming, and we would have been rushed on the buses trying to make it in time. Instead we ventured back to our hotel, changed into our swimsuits, grabbed a couple of Mickey ice cream bars and relaxed in lawn chairs while we enjoyed them and them hopped into our bowling pin pool to cool off and enjoy our last evening in Orlando.

The next morning we packed our suitcases, ate breakfast, walked around our resort for a little while and then boarded the charter bus back to the airport for our trip back to Tulsa.

Disney World Day 6- 1461 Days of Marital Bliss

Although I could hardly contain my excitement about our entire Disney trip, I was most looking forward to Thursday, the day we celebrated 4 years of marriage. 4 wonderful years of marriage might I add. Thursday contained my all time favorite memories of our entire trip. As soon as Matt heard me stirring and waking up Thursday morning, he pulled me close and whispered, "Happy anniversary," and then held me while we savored the moment of remembering back to an incredible first four years of marriage. While we were still in bed, he surprised me with the sweetest anniversary gift, a Disney themed Precious Moments figurine he had picked up earlier in the week. He saw me ogling over them in a gift store and told me he would get me one for my birthday or Christmas. I said okay but made him pick it out and surprise me because there were so many adorable ones that I couldn't choose. He chose the sweetest one and all along planned to surprise me with it on Thursday. It's displayed on our mantle now. I'm thinking it will probably be there for a while :).

We were able to have a lazier morning because we planned to visit Typhoon Lagoon, Disney's second water park and it opened later than the other parks. We made it to the water park just a few minutes before it opened and set off to explore. The ride I was most looking forward to at Typhoon Lagoon was a water coaster named Crush 'N Gusher. It was a coaster not a slide because they used powerful water jets to propel us upward several times during the ride. Once we shot up we would almost immediately drop down and were going fast enough to catch some air in our inner tube. Matt mentioned that he was surprised at how steep the drops were. I'm sure I screamed every time we dropped, not really because it was scary, but just because it was so fun! They had three different coasters in the ride and in total we rode it six times I think. We rode it 4 times that morning and a couple more times right before we left that afternoon.

Another neat thing at Typhoon Lagoon was that they had a snorkeling pool where we got to snorkel through a salt water pool. We saw exotic fish, sting rays, and sharks. We rode all the other slides in the park but weren't too impressed with anything else. Maybe we shouldn't have ridden the Crush 'N Gusher first :) Of course we rode the lazy river which was elaborately decorated with plants and waterfalls as we cruised through. The last thing we did before we left the park was the wave pool which had huge surfing waves. They were by far the biggest waves I've ever experienced in a wave pool.

We left the water park around 1:30, headed back to the hotel and grabbed lunch and rested and then got ready for our big evening which included a dinner reservation with Cinderella at her castle.

We made it back to Magic Kingdom around 5:30 that evening. Since it was the last time we planned to visit Magic Kingdom during our trip, we wanted to make sure we saw everything we had missed before. The first thing we did when we arrived was to see the Mickey's PhilharMagic 3-D show. We were disappointed in the 3-D effects, but I enjoyed the show. It was basically Donald Duck visiting Disney movies while the played all the famous songs. It was a great way to get in the Disney mood :).

After that show, we went to Tomorrowland to catch a few attractions we hadn't ridden yet. We grabbed fast passes for Space Mountain when we arrived so we'd get a chance to ride it one more time. Then we rode the Tomorrowland Transit Authority which was a ride that took us through a tour of Tomorrowland and its major attractions. It was leisurely and relaxing, and I'm pretty sure Matt enjoyed the dark tunnels we went through where he made sure to steal some kisses (Hey, don't judge, it was our anniversary).

After that attraction we saw the Carousel of Progress show where we sat in a circular theater that moved and showed Audio-Animatronics figures sharing about the latest technological advancements at different time periods in the 20th century. It was amazing to think about how cutting edge all this was in the 1960's when Walt Disney thought of the attractions. I wonder if he had any idea of all the technology that was to come in the next 50 years.

We also rode the Astro Orbiter which was similar to the Dumbo ride but 3 stories higher. We realized as we squeezed into the spaceship that it really wasn't made for two adults.

Before we left Tomorrowland, we used our fast passes to ride Space Mountain one last time and then headed back to Fantasyland because it was getting close to our dinner reservation. We had time to ride one last ride in Fantasyland (The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh) and browse through a couple gift shops before we made our way to the castle. We booked our dinner at the castle on Valentine's Day, a good three months in advance, but still were a little disappointed that the only time available was 9:30 pm. Turns out we had nothing to be disappointed about. We couldn't have picked a better time to go. Matt was hoping there would be less children there so late, and it would be more of a romantic atmosphere. Well there were still plenty of children, but our reservation was timed perfectly with the Fireworks Display, and our reservations were so late that the restaurant began emptying out as we ate and was much quieter than if we had gone earlier.

I spent our 4 year anniversary at Disney World, eating dinner in Cinderella's Castle with my prince charming and a spectacular view of the fireworks shooting off outside our window. By far, it was the best anniversary we have ever celebrated and one that will be hard to top. Matt has his work cut out for him next year.

When we arrived we took pictures with Cinderella in the lobby before we went up to the restaurant. The photos were included with our meal, but unfortunately I don't have any digital photos of us with Cinderella. I guess if you want to see those photos, you'll have to come visit us. We waited in the lobby until the hostess announced that Cinderella had a royal invitation to have dinner with the Baugher family. Then we made our way upstairs to enjoy dinner. Dinner was a fun experience. The waiter referred to us as Lord and Princess whenever he asked us a question or brought our food. Shortly after we were seated at our table, the fireworks show started. Again I was mesmerized by the beauty of the Fireworks display and was thankful I got to see some of the show again. Talk about a romantic evening!

The hostess had warned us that we would have a limited viewing because of where the fireworks were shot from, but we saw so many more than I thought we would, and they played all the great music from the show in the restaurant.

While we were eating all the Disney princesses stopped by our table to say hi and take pictures with us. They asked what we were celebrating and when we told them it was our anniversary, they would ask how many happily ever afters we were celebrating. They also remained in character during our conversations. Cinderella mentioned she should take a pumpkin ride to Oklahoma, Belle told us her prince didn't shave very often, Sleeping Beauty warned us to watch out for dragons, and we overheard Ariel saying to another family that she wasn't used to walking on legs. I might not have been 5 years old and believing the princesses were real, but it was still special to see them and take pictures with them.
Our food was good, not great, but we didn't go there for the food. We went for the experience, and it was a great one. They brought us some fun souvenirs including a scepter, a sword, and some wishing stars. They also had a wishing star ceremony. I can't tell you what I wished for though or it might not come true :).

They brought us a special anniversary cake. Too bad we were stuffed from all the rest of the food by the time they brought it to us.

During dinner we reminisced about all the great moments we shared during our 4th year of marriage. We each came up with a list of our top 5 moments together during year 4. We limited ourselves to one Disney experience in the list because Matt mentioned that he could think of 5 just from that week. Oh and we also decided that dinner at the castle didn't count in year 4 either because it occurred after our anniversary since we were married in the afternoon. I bet you can't guess what's going to make my top 5 list for our 5th anniversary.

By the time we finished our meal it was close to 11:00, and we decided we should call it a night. The restaurant was pretty empty by then.

Oh it was such a great night. I had high expectations for that night and was looking forward to it for a long time, but it exceeded my expectations. Sometimes when Matt and I are doing something romantic, and I get that feeling, the one where it feels like you're walking on air, and you're so happy you feel like your heart's going to burst and all is right in the world, I'll lean over and tell him, "I'm feeling all ooey gooey inside." Well, that night was saturated with ooey gooey feelings :). I don't think I'll ever forget it. I can picture us celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and me saying, "Remember that anniversary when we ate dinner at Cinderella's castle." I made Matt promise that if we're ever at Disney World on our anniversary again, we have to eat at the castle.

I really can't believe we've been married for 4 years already. I just can't get over how wonderful they've been. We've had stressful times in our marriage, but the Lord has blessed us so abundantly since we've been married. This last year has been especially great. Removing the stress and busyness of graduate school has given us a chance to really enjoy each other and make great memories. Additionally, we feel like we are putting down roots in Tulsa and it is becoming home to us. We've made great friends and are settled into our jobs, neighborhood, and church family. We're cherishing the time we have to spend together just the two of us.

Disney World Day 5- Africa and Asia all in One Day

Wednesday was the day we visited Animal Kingdom. There were a few attractions I was really looking forward to at this park. Again we arrived a few minutes before the park opened and stood in line. Just before the rope dropped, Mickey and Minnie came out and talked to the crowd about the adventure we were going to have while we explored Animal Kingdom. Following their performance, they moved out of the way, so the crowd could pass and we followed the cast members straight to the Kilimanjaro Safari ride and were able to walk right on the ride with no wait. We were the first safari of the day.

The safari ride was a great attraction. Disney put a lot of effort in making it feel like we were really in the African safari and had so many different animals that we saw. The exciting thing for us was that a lot of the animals seemed to roam freely with no boundaries or fences like you would see at a zoo. Clearly, the more dangerous ones like the lions had barriers, but they seemed natural. Instead of a chain link fence around them there was a huge ledge that they cleverly disguised with plants. You can see in the picture that the giraffe walked right up to our safari. I had never seen a giraffe that close before. Also the Rhino crossed the road right behind our safari as we passed. It was a trip to the local zoo kicked up a notch.

After the safari ride, we left Africa and traveled to Asia to scale Mount Everest and survive an encounter with the Yeti. Expedition Everest was one of 2 major roller coasters at Walt Disney World and we thoroughly enjoyed the thrill. We climbed the mountain, traveled backward in the dark, through dips and spins, saw the Yeti, and dropped back down to the bottom of the mountain all in the matter of just a couple of minutes. After we rode it, we grabbed fastpasses so we could ride it again later that day.

After we had encountered exotic animals in Africa and climbed Mt. Everest, we decided we spend some time exploring the Great Barrier Reef, so we settled in to watch the Finding Nemo musical. Not counting the fireworks shows (Fantasmic and Wishes), Finding Nemo was the best show I saw at Disney World. It totally exceeded my expectations. The show used giant puppets to portray the characters, and they were incredible. The sting ray (Nemo's teacher), and Crush the sea turtle were my favorite puppets. Many of them were so big, they required two or three people. The music was great, and Finding Nemo is such a good movie anyway with a fun/heartwarming/cute storyline, they really couldn't go wrong with it. It was a 45 minute show, so they left some details of the plot out, but I thought they did a better job with including the majority of the plot of the movie than some of the other shows we saw.

After the musical and riding Expedition Everest one more time, we set off to see some of the smaller attractions in the park. We walked through an exotic bird exhibit and saw a 3-D show based off of A Bug's Life in the Tree of Life. That was a creepy, crawly show, but they did a good job on the 3-D effects. We also rode the Dinosaur attraction which was a simulator ride where we travel back in time in an attempt to bring a dinosaur back to the present. The animatronic dinosaurs were well done, and the ride was fun but a little bumpy and jerky. Oh, and we were rushed because of a meteor shower, so we didn't make it back with the dinosaur :).

We took a break from touring to enjoy a Mickey Ice Cream bar. I had been telling Matt all week that at some point we had to get one. I didn't think it would be that good, but I wasn't leaving Disney World without eating one. Turns out, it was very yummy. We got another later in the week. I kindof wish I could eat one right now.

We strolled through one of the trails in the park and happened to see a mother gorilla and her baby. I stayed and watched for a long time. Matt finally pulled me away because he was so bored. I'm a sucker for baby animals

That afternoon, we saw the Festival of the Lion King show. This show was different than other ones we had seen, because it wasn't really based on the movie. They just had different performers, singers, dancers, and acrobats that performed to the music of the Lion King. It's hard to go wrong with songs from that movie. They had a sing along at the end of the show

After the Lion King show, we walked through another one of the animal trails and enjoyed seeing Komodo dragons, fish, and tigers.

As we were walking through the park, Matt pointed out another baby monkey. He probably regretted that decision, because I stopped, and stood and stared again until he grabbed by hand and forced me away :)

By that point we had ridden all the major attractions except the rapids ride which I would have been just fine missing. I read in my guide book that people get totally soaked on that ride. The book even gave tips of things to do to stay dry including wearing plastic trash sacks. I like water rides, but only when I'm at a water park in a bathing suit. The idea of soggy jean shorts and walking in soaked socks for the rest of the day didn't really appeal to me, but apparently it did appeal to my husband, because he didn't want to leave without riding it. We had to wait about half an hour to ride it, and yes I did get totally soaked. As we were walking off the ride, a little girl standing in line saw us, and pointed and said to her mom, "They got wet." We were very wet. My shorts still weren't dry the next day. But with all that being said, I'm glad we rode it. It was a fun ride. At one point we were priding ourselves on being positioned just so that we missed getting water dumped on us, and just then a huge wave of water landed right on top of us. Thankfully, we left the park after we rode that ride and were able to head straight back to the hotel and put on some dry clothes.

After a nap at the hotel, we decided to go to Disney Quest that night. Since we had bought tickets with the water parks option, we had free admission to Disney Quest, which was a giant five story video arcade. They had all the classic video games. I lost count of how many games of ski ball I played, but they also had some elaborate virtual reality games. We rode a bumper car ride where Matt drove us around driving over balls that collected in the car. My job was to load the balls into a gun in our car and shoot them at the other cars. That was one of my favorite games of the night. We also were able to design our own roller coaster and then ride it in a simulator. That was really fun too. The simulator was pretty advanced and we actually were able to go upside down on the loops. We ended the night by pretending to be pirates and firing our guns at other ships to get their gold. I was captain, so I had the responsibility of navigating the ship and helping Matt fire at the other ships.

Disney World Day 4- Florida's First Ski Resort

Initially, we had planned to spend all day Tuesday at the Magic Kingdom. However, after our late night the evening before, we altered our plans and decided to visit Blizzard Beach on Tuesday morning. We knew we didn't need to spend an entire day at Magic Kingdom because we had seen so much of the park already, and we weren't keen on waking up before 7:00 that morning to make it to the park when it opened since we were out so late the night before. We hadn't planned to visit Blizzard Beach during our trip (Just the other water park, Typhoon Lagoon), but since we had some extra time and since it opened later meaning we got a little extra sleep, we decided to visit Florida's first ski resort.
The only problem with Florida's ski resort is that it had melted, leaving behind mountains of water slides including the tallest water slide in the United States (120 feet tall). We actually ended up liking this water park more than Typhoon Lagoon, so it's a good thing we were able to visit it. The whole theme was well executed and there were props and decorations everywhere that resembled a ski resort. It was definitely a fun atmosphere. We arrived just as the park opened and after storing our things in the locker headed off to enjoy some good old water park fun. It had been a couple years since Matt and I had visited a water park, and I was long overdue, so I was ready for some slides, flumes, lazy rivers, and wave pools. When we entered the park, Matt said that if I wanted to ride the tallest water slide (Summit Plummet), we probably needed to ride it first since the long was likely to get long if we waited until later to ride it. At that time I was still debating as to whether I wanted to ride it or not. Typically, I'm not a fan of tall steep slides at water parks. I had a bad experience on one that ended with giant amounts of water up my nose and had no fun at all. However, I really didn't want to miss the opportunity to say that I had ridden the tallest water slide in America. While I was making up my mind whether or not to ride it, we rode some of the other rides in the park. I did ride the Slush and Gusher which was a smaller version of the Summit Plummet with a few extra dips. I actually somewhat enjoyed that slide and it helped boost my courage :). We also rode a couple of flume rides and a toboggan slide that was probably our favorite. It was a racing slide, and we rode it twice. Matt won the first time and I won the second. That was our favorite water ride of the day. The slides were really fun. They were new to us, so the first time we rode them was always the most fun because we didn't know what to expect.

After riding a few slides, we made our way to the lazy river to relax and soak up some sun. Relaxing away in an inner tube to the gentle water currant with the love of my life just makes me happy especially when he gave me a foot massage through most of the time we were in the lazy river. It was nice to get off our feet and rest for a half an hour. By the time we got out of the lazy river, I had convinced myself that I was capable of riding the Summit Plummet, and we rode the chair lift up to the top of the mountain and got in line. It was about 2 hours after the park opened so the line was considerably longer and we had to wait about 25 minutes which wasn't good for my nerves. I kept second guessing myself and had butterflies in my stomach for about the last 15 minutes of the wait. I think Matt got a kick out of my anxiety. He was sweet though and kept saying "Angela, I know you can do it, but if you don't want to, that's okay." I will say that I did manage to sit down on that slide and push off and made it down the whole 120 feet in one piece. I did kept bumped around a lot, but I survived and was proud of what I had accomplished :). Matt still says that waiting in line and watching me go down the slide was one of the best moments of the trip for him. He says he thinks I'm cute by how nervous I get before we ride scary rides. I would show you the picture that Disney took of me on the slide for proof that I actually rode it, but they charge $14.95 for me to download it, so you'll just have to trust that I really did it.

We stopped by the wave pool for a few minutes to ride some waves and grabbed a snack before we called it a day at Blizzard Beach and headed back to the hotel to shower and change and get ready for the rest of the day.

We had reservations for an early dinner at The Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom so we made it to the park about 3:30. We took a couple of pictures, and walked around a bit, before we ate dinner. The Crystal Palace was a buffet, and the food was just okay for me especially considering the price. I wasn't quite desensitized to the cost of everything at Disney World at that point. The character dining was actually pretty fun though which made up for the not so great food. All the Winnie the Pooh characters stopped by our table to say hi while we were eating, so we had some fun photo opps. Matt was really excited to meet Eeyore and talked about it all through dinner.

We told the hostess that we were celebrating our anniversary, so they decorated our table before we were seated. They also gave us Happy Anniversary buttons that we wore at the parks for a couple of days. So many people told us Happy Anniversary when we were wearing them. It was really fun!

Matt made a point to try and eat ice cream everyday on our trip. He kept saying that he was on vacation, so he was allowed to eat ice cream everyday :)

After our dinner, we wanted to catch some of the attractions we had missed the night before. We headed back to Tomorrowland to watch the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor show (which made me want to watch the movie again. Actually there's a lot of Disney movies I want to watch after visiting Disney World). Then, we went to Adventureland and explored the Swiss Family Tree House, rode the Pirates of the Caribbean (It was over hyped in my opinion), and rode the Jungle Cruise where we rode a boat along a river where there were lots of animatronic animals that we passed. Our tour guide on the boat was hilarious. She had a whole script that was probably about 10 minutes full of sarcasm and puns. We chuckled through the whole ride.

When we finished seeing everything in Adventureland we went over to the Toontown fair area. We stopped along the way and rode the tea cups at Fantasyland. The line was surprisingly short, and let me tell you, Matt knows how to spin those things. I couldn't walk straight when I got off, and before we boarded he asked that we not spin too fast because he was getting a headache. I'm not sure what it would have been like if he was feeling good when we rode it. That was another iconic attraction that I was excited to ride. We also walked through some of the attractions at the Toontown Fair area including Mickey and Minnie's houses and some gift shops. From there we rode the train back to Main Street and called it an early night. We were still recovering from the previous day and Matt was ready to head home a little after 8:00 to rest up for our next adventure.
